1 Timothy Overview
- Laws are for the unrighteous
- Learn patience, even when he already knows what will happen
- Patience is for salvation
- Pray for everyone, including those in positions of authority
- God desires everyone to be saved, however, not everyone will be
- verses 2:11-15, submission of women in role of marriage
- Women redeemed themselves through child-bearing, faith, love, and holiness
- “Husband of but one wife”
- Married couples are to be pure
- Women can hold position of deacon
- Overseer must be able to teach
- If not real Christian, can easily be swayed by false teaching, cannot be “elect”
- Do not call someone/something unclean, for it is clean in God’s eyes
- verse 3:7, Have a good reputation with outsiders, do not fall into disgrace, cannot be accused
- verse 4:8, physical training is okay, but spiritual training is better
- verse 4:10, Christ is Savior for all, salvation is effective for those who trust him
- Watch your life and your doctrine and for those who hear you
- Rebuke someone out of love and help correct their ways
- Younger women take care of widows
- Immediate family members have first priority to take care of widow in their family (Reference to book of Ruth)
- Widows should first put their trust in the Lord
- Anyone who does not care for a widow for their family is worse than a non-believer
- If a widow has no immediate/extended family, then put on church list
- To get on support list, widows must have served the church and they care for their needs
- If a widow remarries, she is removed from the support list
- Warning, young widows are “busybodies”, can be easily swayed be false teachings
- verses 5:17-20, Do nothing out of favoritism
- As a leader/teacher, once you start serving, your private life is not your own anymore and open to scrutiny, must be a role model at all times
- If as a leader you sin, you cause your students to stumble as well
- Elders follow all of the teachings and receive “Double Honour”
- Let the OX enjoy while working
- Cannot accuse an elder unless have several witnesses
- Rebuke publicly as warning to others and so that the same mistake will be made
- DO NOT be a leader who wants to direct affairs of church but not be accountable!
- Anyone who leads and says “I’m only accountable to God” is heading for trouble and must be questioned!
- verse 5:21, Again, DO NOT SHOW FAVOURITISM!
- Pastor determines the path for the church, leader reflects the population
- Sins and Good deeds will all be revealed
- First passage of chapter 6 directed to believing slaves
- Relation of masters and slaves
- Even if we, as slaves, are mistreated, we still have to obey (office, family, work, military, etc.)
- story of Joseph sold as a slave by his brothers
- Even if your superior is a Christian, still have no excuse to slack off
- We are harder critics towards each other, also works as accountability
- verses 6:3-5, people take advantage using their knowledge , any kind of advantage
- Money itself is not evil, but the love of money is
- Story of the lady who gave two pennies
- Give to God first and blessings will flow
- Do not deal with those who teach false doctrine, argue God’s instructions, or not Godly teachers
- Stay away from conceited people who want to argue over words
- We did not bring anything into the world
- We will leave the world with nothing with us
- Be glad for what we have
- live out the doctrine of God and think ahead
- Flee from false teachers, money gainers (fraud/scam artists), and those who like to argue over nothing
- Pursue righteousness, faith, and love
- take hold of eternal life with proper mindset and attitude
- In God’s sight, keep the command until the Lord appears
- Reproach = Accusing someone of doing something
- Don’t put your hope into wealth/money, do good with it
- Don’t waste time with meaningless chatter
- False knowledge is by those who think they need to know secrets to know God (THIS IS WRONG!)
- Paul is ordering / telling Titus to keep his commands
- Put your hope in God, let your riches glorify God
