Titus (overview)
- Paul wrote to Titus, similar to Timothy, leader of church in Crete island
- Most likely Titus served with Paul in 2nd and 3rd missions
- Titus leading a gentile church
- verses 1-4 is one huge sentence
- Manifested saving, promise before the beginning of time
- Paul starts letter with reason to live through faith, knowledge and godliness
- Titus must appoint and train overseers, verses 5-9 explains these requirements
- verse 9 differentiates an elder from a deacon
- Overseer = bishop
- Paul tells that the circumcision group are liars warping the truth and must be rebuked
- beware of myths and lies
- verse 16, those who say one thing but do something else
- Beware impure people who claim to be good but obviously are not
- Older men to be temperate
- Older women not to gossip and train younger women to love, be pure, and subject to their husbands
- Young men to be self-controlled, have integrity, seriousness, soundness of speech, those who oppose you are ashamed
- Bond slaves to be subject to their masters, please them, and not steal, including willful slaves
- God brings salvation to all, no to ungodliness, and self-control
- We are his possession to do good deeds and bring glory to him
- verse 11 similar to John 3:16
- verse 15, teach, rebuke with authority
- Remind “everyone” to follow government and the law
- verse 3:7 explains an ungodly person
- Christ saved us because of his mercy
- verse 3:5 debated between Calvinists and Arminians
- verse 3:7, justified by Grace
- Doing good deeds is byproduct of being good by Grace, not the reason to be good
